You run an excellent site, and I appreciate your efforts very much. The
quality and organization of the content is exceptional. Thanks for all you
do.

I am new to the sport, and I am learning this winter (snowboarding). I have
limited, if any, local access to assistance. This site has proven to be of
tremendous value.

Thanks again.

I was looking theoretics on board design and features and didn't find much about it on ur website. So I did a reasearch on internet about it and found some interestinf links you might be intrested in putting up. Though they are on windsurfing boards the same physics apply to kiteboards:

I'm taking the opportunity to contact you because I am an Inverness

Surfing at Nairn Beach near Inverness. I just want to ask you if you might
like to point some of your folk to my website just to have a look. Site URL

keeping them on the site for view for a while. It was the first time that I

Brian,

"Slick" means "flat, smooth water"

I will add it in the glossary in this update.

Hello Hung,

I am just dropping you a note to say thanks for all the work you have put
into your site. I think it is great that there is a one stop shop for all
information about kiting.

I would be curious on your take between PASA and IKO. I am scheduled to
take the PASA ICP next week and curious if you feel that adding IKO on top
of that would be useful.

I have also added a link to your site and was wondering if you might be able
to do the same for me. I recently left my corporate job to chase wind full
time and I am hoping to make a modest living selling kites and teaching
others about this wonderful sport.

I hope to see you out at an event in the future,

Hi Hung,

First of all I'd like to say I'm greatly thankful for this marvelous website.
I'm a software engineer, so I'm very familiar with open source software, but this was a great initiative.

I thing I'd like to suggest is creating an audio version of www.kitesurfingschool.org. It would be great to have some folks volunteer to read the website and record in mp3 format, so we can make it portable to listen in our cars, or wherever we are. Look at http://librivox.org/  to see what I mean.

I myself would volunteer, but although I speak english, I have a Brazilian portuguese accent.

Dear KitesurfingSchool.org webmaster:

My name is David Ballarin, from Spain, and have been using the Surplan software for several months.
I've just been reading your pseudo Surplan Manual and it's great. Congratulations for the whole webpage too.
I had read your log a long time ago without noticing who the author was, and it inspired me to do the same thing,
that is, to keep track of all my kiting days. I still keep printed copies of your log from 07/03/1999.
But, when I recently tried to find your page again I was not lucky. I just thought
your page was no longer online. Finally I found it again, and was happy to find out that the famous Hung Vu that people
talk about in the Inflatodesign Yahoo group was the same person I used to read when I started kiting.
Anyway, I would like to make some comments about your User Manual:

...

Congratulations once more for this awesome work !

Hi there Hung:

Great new look for your site <http://www.kitesurfingschool.org/>

Oh yeah, one more suggestion....do a google or yahoo search on "kite

buggy" and race and see what you come up with....(grin)..

There is a whole other world out there of kite buggy fanatics who

have been at it for quite a while. The pictures of kite buggy racing

will blow your mind.

Start with a site like <http://www.kitebuggyaustralia.kite-house.com/>

Then look at <http://www.kitelife.com/classifieds/index.php?a=5&b=381>

Then try <http://www.racekites.com/home/home.asp>

and on to <http://www.windpowersports.com/buggies/buggy.html>

You get the idea.

My point is, Hung, you might care to add links to the huge world of kites.

G'day Hung,

Good to see that your website gets better all the time :-)

Just a quick bit of feedback on your safety page - you can quite easily

self-recover with many foils by re-launching on the A-B bridles then parking

the kite to one side - I teach my students this all the time. It is simple

not true to suggest that you MUST pack a foil up and swim in as the only

self-recovery technique.

Cheers,

Ian

Very nice site! Seems like lot of work.

We are running the German Kitesurfing-Page http://www.kitesurfen.de/

What do you think about, if we translate your site (or parts of it)

Also, could you give us a link in your pages as a German Kitesurfing

"The Ultimate Kitesurfing-Guide"

You can find it at http://www.oase.com/links/Kitesurfen/index.html

If you would like to have an other Title, just send me an email.

And at least, could you integrate http://oase.com/tomahawk/ as a

Hi,

I recomend you read Hung Vu's web site...

http://tor-pw1.netcom.ca/~hungvu/kitesurfing.htm

Specially the section "Log", as most of your problems mantaining tension in

the lines are common problems and Hung Vu faced the same problem and

explains how to correct your kite handling....I am a beginner also but

reading his comments helped me a lot...My gess is that 40 meters of line is

a bit to much...

Good Luck...

Hi

I am just starting kitesurfing and like others, I have to face this

challenge by myself. I came across your site while trying to get info in the

net. It is well designed, easy to browse, and most important very very

helpful.

I really wanted to congratulate you for the job you've done.

I took great pleasure reading your kitesurfer log, it gives a good idea of

the learning curve one should expect. Not to mention your step by step

instructions about what must be mastered even before putting a toe on the

board. I printed it and will follow your advice.

...

One request for your site : would be nice to have a picture gallery.

Be sure your efforts to keep track of your first kitesurfing days are

compensated by the happiness of all the newcomers like me who are visiting

your site.

Thanks, I will try to keep you updated about my progression.

Out of all the websites I have looked at about kitesailing yours seems to be

the most informative, I will be getting my kitesail in the next couple of

weeks and I think your site will help me alot. One question, will I be able

to control my kite standing on the beach, I a little scared it will pull me

off my feet and I will bust my ass. Is it controllable? I think I am going to

order a Wipika 5.0.

Congratulations and thanks for a terrific site. It's the best kitesurf site

by far, with lots of useful information, not just pictures or blah blah.

My background is in traction kites and buggying, not windsurfing. I have

also snow-sked for 25 years, but not snowboarded. The kites I use are all

foils ranging from a Quadrifoil XXXL all the way to a Skytiger Hi-15 with

everything in between.

Anyway, I think your comment on waterskis in your FAQ is quite misleading.

Nobody knows what kind of skis $30 tag-sale specials are, so who can say if

they would work? What I can say is that I bought some new O'Brian Amigo

skis and they are FAR easier to use than either a wakeboard or surf board.

These are very easy beginner skis, not extra large, nothing special at all.

I found that I could start right from the edge of the water on the sand and

take off onto a plane immediately, and have no jibing problems to try to

master. I got up the first time I tried, it really is EASY. I've tried a

wakeboard, using same kite at same site in same wind and I couldn't ever get

up out of the water.

It seems like the kitesurf crowd is quite far removed from waterskiers, so

maybe there's a bias against waterskis. But I can tell you for sure that

kite-waterskiiing is far easier than kitesurfing. But now I have a Fox

Hatteras kiteboard, so I'm learning kitesurfing.

Keep up the good work with your most excellent site!

to kite surf. All of them, and your site too, assume that the person is

familiar with surfing or skiing and new to kiting. In my case it's just

the opposite. I've been a competitive kite flier for almost 15 years. I

can fly 2 and 4 line kites with my eyes closed, upside down, backwards, etc

:-) But can I stand on a board and do all this... I dunno' .

Hung,

I enjoyed the updates to your kite school website. The jumping section is

very good.

You may want to mention that when jumping it is important to keep your

inputs small. When I first started jumping I tried 20 meter lines one day.

The first time I jumped I zoomed the kite forward into a power dive 10 feet

above the water. It was not a pretty sight.

You may want to include the wind range of a heavier kite surfer using a full

quiver of kites. You and Mel are lucky to have so much lower end range with

your kites. I weigh 175 LBS and I would be happy to give you the wind range

of my quiver.

'What About Safety?

Kitesurfing is not as dangerous as some other sports such as hang gliding; however, kitesurfing is more dangerous compared to other "safer" sports such as windsurfing. In kitesurfing or any other forms of power kiting, safety has to be taken seriously. It is recommended that you take kitesurfing lession from a local reputable kitesurfing school. If you have to learn kitesurfing all by yourself, make sure that you have read and fully understood the safety section before attempting to kitesurf.'

A bit pedantic, but at least some-ones listening and giving input. Great site! I am a lifelong surfer from South Africa now living in the UK and after two years of complete frustration I think I have found something that will allow me to cross-over with the same rush that I used to get from pulling into 10 to 12 ft pitching barrels.

largest multi-watersports instructional facility in the world (14,000

students last year).

We are planning to launch our kiteboarding classes in the near future. Most

and curriculum developed.

I need to write the student manual, which is distributed free at the

beginning of each class. Your website is the most comprehensive, well

written, source of information I have seen on the sport. Rather than

reinvent the wheel, may we have your permission to cut and past portions of

your site for the manual? We will cite you as the source of the info, and

list your web site as a source for more information. Additionally, I will

Besides helping us to continue to offer high-quality, safety orientated,

good for huge moves and steady winds...

Hung Vu,

I believe I am writing to the builder of the kitesailing website. Its a great site. I do not sail yet, but I am planning on it. I'm a 50 year old ex-windsurfer that stopped for various reasons about 12 years ago. Not enough wind locally to do really good windsurfing, too busy to get down to the gorge with any frequency. I have really missed it, but have never seriously considered getting back into it. Kitesailing though seems like it is the answer. I get the impression that less wind is needed. I live on the water near Victoria B.C. and have many, many days of 8 - 15 knots of wind, and almost nothing higher than that.

I weigh 165 pounds and I believe an 8.5 Wipika should power me sufficiently in that type of wind to have lots of fun.

I am writing to say how much your site has helped me. The section on your first 40 days was daunting...it takes a long time to learn...but very, very informative. Thank you so much for all your help. I have bookmarked it and will continue to read it over time.

Sincerely

Steven Cox

Merritt Island is just West of (World Famous) Cocoa Beach on the East Coast - directly east of Orlando actually! I love it here although Tampa has a thing or two going for it also! I prefer the Atlantic over the gulf but wouldn't mind having to live on either coast. Never been to Hawaii but I'll bet there isn't a bad coast there either. I get to live in a Condo right on the beach, not far from Ron Jon's Surf shop actually(which I'm sure you've heard of, everyone has). I must be doing something right, life is good!!!

I ran into two kite surfers yesterday at the park who were thrilled with the new area we are clearing - hopefully the complaint/ problem will blow over and everyone will just play nice! They were pretty confident that the new beach access will be plenty ( we were able to clear a 200' area about 50' wide along the beach).

Thanks again for all the info - I'll let you know how good of a sell job we did to the advisory board next week. Have a nice weekend, Cathie

Hung Vu,

My name is John Anderson. I have been a professional action watersport's instructor (windsurfing) for the past 15+yrs. and am now a certified Instructor Evaluator Clinic Conductor working on behalf of the Canadian Yachting Association. In recent years I have begun to transfer these teaching skills into kiteboarding and the broarder world of powerkiting in general.

Your site has proven thus far to be the most valuable, sensible, well thought out, through, complete and useful website I have thus far encountered on the subject and am now insisting that all of my students/customers be well acquainted with the information and materials contained herein.

Recently I just completed an exclusive interview with an area newspaper in which I recommended your website as the definitive source for area kiting info. with a global perspective.

Today I just added your website's link onto my own modest website whereby I refer to for customers seeking information regarding new/used gear lessons/info. for kiteing/windsurfing in order to contact me via cell phone or email to meet with me personally as I'm at or on the water flying kites or windsurfing every day of the year!

So, thank you very much for making your cyber space contribution such a benefit and resource to us land/air/snow & water action types the world over.

I trust your personal kiteboarding experiences are progressing well and I bless you with Good winds, for a job well done.

Thank You very much,

Sincerely,

HI there,

I just wanted to say that I love your site. It's the most informative of all the sites on the net. It does not have that "Hardcore" feel that turns off so many of the no0bs to the sport such as myself. It is accessable, informative and enjoyable to read. Not to mention that you are Canadian ;-) <<<that's always a good thing...for once a site that talks to Canadian Kiteboarders vs the tropics approach that generally makes me drool....though I did enjoy all the coverage you had on your time down south.

Anyhow Again thanks so much for maintaining this site. It has been most helpful. I am getting a whole bunch of my friends involved in this sport this summer, so your site WILL be required reading for the bunch.

Have a great day. I look forward to any more new stuff you might be posting in the near future.

BTW one thing I would love to see on your site is Kite reviews. You seem to have experience with several. and a solid review of your XXXL would be something I would lookforward to since that is the kite I am learning on.

Take care

Most beginners kitesurfing advice recommends learning in cross or on

-shore winds. How do I get far enough off shore, in on-shore winds, so I

can have a good couple of attempts at waterstarting before ending up

downwind & on the beach.

My only solution has been body-dragging. But I still have great

difficulty body dragging upwind.

Many thanks for any advice you might have on this.

enjoyed them. My finless "plysurfing" boards are loose and fun as you

describe. I haven't yet made a board any thicker than 1/2 inch...most

have been 3/8 inch ply. My favorites are from 48 to 60 inches in

length and from 16-18 inches in width, and I prefer rockerless as you

seem to prefer (they seem to develop a tiny bit of rocker eventually

anyway). I weigh about 185 lbs and am about 6 feet tall. Haven't

tried pine; looks like a great idea and a better looking result. Now

I have another project! Do you find any functional differences

between a plywood board and a single piece of pine (durability, flex,

maintenance of shape vs warping, tendency to take on water)?

Thanks for the good work and good ideas...John in Arizona

Thank you for the most amazing site on the web. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your lessons/findings.

I began the sport at the end of last year, but unfortunately I haven't had the time to get out on the water this year. I managed to get up on my board last year, but then packed up for the season. Basically, I'm looking for a lesson or two, to build some confidence in the water and with my 4 line kite (2 line last year).

Do you know of anyone 1-2hours from Toronto area that might be willing to offer me some instruction, preferably Wasaga or Grand Bend.

Thanks for taking the time

Quick question for you all,

I'm new to kite surfing and have a quick question,

I'm looking at getting my own gear and have looked at the c111 8.5m cabrinha and auto pilot board as a good package kit to start out with

Question is I can't find and info on the kite in terms of charts so I am asking your all opinion, wind here at Charleston sc is normally around 5-15 mph and I weigh around 170, is the kite ok for the conditions and is it a good beginner package to start with?

Thanks for your time,

Came across your site today looking for info on kite surfing.

I'm an absolute beginner, just bought the equipment in one of my trips and

learning to do it myself. I'm working in Tanzania (East Africa) and there

are no kite surfing schools here. Haven't found anyone who does it either.

Found lots of useful things / tips on your site already, can't wait to try

Hi Hung,

Congrats for your page. I have followed it even before existed. I was with

you since the very early stages of the forum and of this sport.

Just adding the following to your page on speed chapter

You talk about numbers of fins. I think the whole text is rather obsolete.

One fin does not track well at all and today´s bidirectionals regularly have

4, 5 even 6 fins but that does not mean that they will all be immersed at

the same time thus creating more drag.

I think this should also be explained

Hi Hung

I would like to ask for some help from you. First let me explain why... I was at one of the beaches in Boston yesterday with crappy wind 0-15. I noticed another person put up a kite in a crowed area (not the usual kiting part of the beach) I went to talk to him and found out he had zero kite time. He was sold a storm1 16 on the net. He said he had read up a lot about kiting and wanted to try it. In this wind he had real trouble just launching, and then the kite falling. It was not a good situation.

I sure this story happens a lot. Well.. anyway I asked him if he read your site, no.

As a member of NEKA and someone proactively trying to get www.neka.us in a user friendly & useful state I would like to ask permission to a) as a mimimum make strong references to the useful kitesafety parts of your site or b) I would prefer to proxy the safety sections on www.neka.us

I feel links to you site are ok but if a newbie finds the boston site they are more likely to read the info on the boston site than to follow a link to yours.

What are your thoughts on this?

thanks in advance, pauric

20 below in Boston (home) driving north on PCH I saw kitesurfing for the

first time. There were some amazing surfers this day, their boards were

very small about 18 X 56 inches. The best guy there was able to kite

into the waves, surf down the face of the breaking turn back into the

wave and jump and fly, simply amazing control. In my naivetÈ it looked

so easy I assumed in must likewise be easy to learn, your log has set me

straight on this, by the nd of your log I was able to understand (more

naivetÈ) going upwind.

any information, web links etc would be much appreciated.
